Abstract:

Dealing with mental health problems at work is a new key aspect in prevention and rehabilitation research. Especially under changing working conditions, exclusion of personnel with mental health problems may increase in form of sickness absence and early retirement. More than 40% of incident early retirements in Germany are due to mental disorders (DRV, 2017). There is often low tolerance for persons with mental disorders, as they are thought to be less productive or less competent and cannot fulfill nowadays work requirements (OECD, 2012).

To initiate a reintegration consultation (BEM, Ramm et al., 2012) while the person is in a rehabilitation treatment may be a fruitful first step for return to work. A positive outcome in a reintegration consultation, i.e. the willingness of the employer and team colleagues to support reintegration, depends on the reaction of the supervisor and the team colleagues towards the handicapped employee. This can be best observed and explored in terms of social distance.

A proactie performance of the person with a handicap herself is of importance (Muschalla et al., 2016). Beside, also the chosen channel of communication may be relevant, i.e. who communicates the mental health handicap. Rehabilitation physicians and other therapists might be helpful in explaining the mental health problem and the solution to the supervisor (Baer, 2015). This may increase acceptance (Baer, 2015).
