Disabled women - doubly discriminated
The authoress, the disabled representative of the Bavarian State Government presents the "double discrimination" which women are subject to. The future perspectives for women with disabilities in all areas of life are still more unfavourably assessed than those of men with disabilities, the label "disabled" to a large extent determines their existence.
Disadvantages for women with disabilities exist in very different areas of life: in the working world, in rehabilitation, in questions of partnership and maternity, in family and the home and in social life. Different measures are presented targeted at improving the situation in the job market for women with disabilities, especially those which allow them effective rehabilitation. Also referred to are the numerous pilot projects in this area which have been established according to the criteria of the "Federal German Working Party for Rehabilitation".
Especially problematic is the situation for housewives and mothers with disabilities and for their children and husbands. In order to help these families it is absolutely necessary that a covering network of outpatient services is available to relieve the families and that the technical household aids needed are guaranteed. The authoress also mentions the specific problems of sexuality for disabled women: on the one side they hardly have the possibility to freely experience their sexuality. On the other side they are to a large extent victims of sexual harassment and abuse.
In the meanwhile there are projects by disabled women for disabled women - so called networks - in six German Lands to increase their self-confidence and defend themselves against discrimination. Those affected have the opportunity to support, advise and exchange experiences with each other.
Unfortunately, in women's politics in the Federal German Government the subject "disabled women" has not yet been sufficiently considered.
